When It Finally Ticks

Okay. Let’s talk about that in-between place.

Not the win.

Not the meltdown.

The middle.

Last night one of my students pulled up after her run and kind of smiled like she didn’t trust herself to say it out loud.

“I don’t know how it’s happening… but it’s starting to tick in my head. Like a clock.”

And I just looked at her and thought, there. it. is.

Because a few weeks ago? We were knocking poles. Missing spots. Overriding barrels. Fighting each other. Fighting herself. There were tears. There were long exhales. There were quiet drives home.

It was not smooth.

And the wild part? The breakthrough had nothing to do with her riding harder.

It was her eyes.

Her seat.

Her legs.

And her brain finally slowing down long enough to ride with a plan.

Young competitors overlook that stuff all the time. They want to run. They want to win. They think speed fixes it.

Speed exposes it.

Your eyes set the line.

Your seat controls the rate.

Your legs shape the pocket.

Your mind decides before your hands panic.

When those are off, the whole pattern feels like chaos. When they line up, it feels like rhythm. Like something inside you settles.

And here’s the part I love. It didn’t click because she got more talented overnight. It clicked because she stayed when it was frustrating. She kept doing the boring drills. She listened. She adjusted. She owned the mistakes.

She did not quit in the messy middle.

That’s the part we all hate.

The business that is not growing yet.

The body that is not responding yet.

The marriage that still feels tender.

The confidence that still feels shaky.

You show up. You try. You tweak. And nothing feels different.

So you start wondering if maybe you are not built for this.

I have been there more times than I care to admit.

There is something about that season where you feel clumsy and behind and exposed. You start gripping. You start overthinking. You start pushing harder instead of smarter.

And most of the time, what needs to change is not your effort. It is your focus.

Where are your eyes?

What are you sitting into instead of fighting?

Are you reacting, or are you thinking ahead?

Sometimes growth looks like slowing your brain down while everything else is moving fast.

That internal clock she talked about did not show up out of nowhere. It was building in the background. Every missed pole. Every correction. Every reset.

We do not feel progress while it is wiring.

We feel awkward.

Then one day, something shifts.

You are not gripping as tight.

You are not panicking before the turn.

You are not doubting every decision.

It is not perfect. It is just steadier.

And that steadiness? That is earned.

If you are in a season where it has not clicked yet, I want to sit across from you and say this like a friend, not a coach.

Stay.

Stay in the arena.

Stay in the conversation.

Stay in the discipline.

Stay long enough to let the wiring finish.

Because when it finally starts to tick in your head, when you feel that rhythm instead of chaos, you will realize the struggle was not a sign to leave.

It was proof you were building feel.

And feel cannot be rushed.

It is earned in dirt, in repetition, in humility, and in showing up again when you would rather not.

That is where things start to click.
