when selfish is allowed

Here’s a lighter one.
There is something to be said for a little treat that is yours and yours alone.
Not for the house.
Not for the kids.
Not for your husband.
Not for the office.
Not for the group chat.
For you.
Life gets busy fast. Work, laundry, dishes, school papers, sports schedules, groceries, bills, appointments, emails, the constant hum of everything needing something from you. And somewhere in the middle of all of that, the little things that make you feel like yourself start getting pushed to the side.
That is your sign to stop doing that.
Go buy the snack nobody else likes. Better yet, buy the snack nobody gets to touch. I am talking about the deeply personal, non-shareable treats. The kind you do not announce when you bring them home. Mine? Vanilla Sugar Wafers . An indulgence handed down honestly and proudly by my grandma Loretta, who always seemed to have the good stuff around when I was little. One bite and suddenly life feels a little softer.
Buy yourself flowers from Walmart.
Why?
Because you want to.
People act like flowers need a holiday or a reason. They do not. A cheap bouquet in a mason jar can change the whole feel of a room, especially when it is cold, gray, and muddy outside. Sometimes a little color on the counter is enough to lift the air in the house and lift you with it.
Order the CD.
Yes, a real one.
Pick up the audiobook you have been eyeing.
Grab the spicy book.
Go window shop for an hour.

Sit on your front step and watch the sunset like you used to.
Rock in the Cracker Barrel rocker for ten quiet minutes and do not apologize for it.
Kick off your shoes and walk barefoot in the grass, even if part of it is still cold and patchy.
That kind of grounding still counts.
And honestly, next time it is warm enough and raining, go stand in it.
Or lay in the driveway and let the world think what it wants.
Will you get weird looks? Probably.
Will you care five minutes later when your brain finally feels quiet? Probably not.
Take the everything shower.
Not the rushed version.
Not the survival version.
The real one.
Use the second shampoo.
Use the body scrub.
Use the lotion you keep saving.
Shave, exfoliate, deep condition, moisturize, all of it. Take the full extra ten minutes and remind yourself you are still a person, not just a machine keeping everybody else running.
We talk a lot about self-care like it has to be expensive or impressive or perfectly aesthetic. It does not. Sometimes it is a gas station cookie dough cup from Jack Flash. Sometimes it is a fresh bouquet, a sunset, a good book, or a quiet little burn barrel chat while you throw away something that has been weighing on you for too long.
Sometimes the smallest act of choosing yourself is enough to change the tone of your whole day.
Be a little selfish.
The healthy kind.
Take the ten minutes.
Buy the treat.
Read the book.
Watch the sky.
Touch the grass.
Keep the good chocolate hidden.
You deserve small joy too.
